My Top 3 Recommendations for Starter Cameras

This may be one of the single most frequently asked questions I get. So it’s high time I made a post about it. Please keep in mind that these are entry level DSLRs. As you grow with photography, you may find yourself wanting to level up. I’ll make a new blog post about that soon.

As I tell all my of students, brands are brands are brands. They are all different, but all the same. Different camera bodies have different limitations but also excel in different ways. If you are brand new to photography, want a nice camera to take pictures of your kids or adventures, these are all excellent bodies to choose from. I have also included links to prime (fixed focal length; sharper) and telephoto (zoom) lenses for each model.

If you have any questions about the cameras listed here, feel free to shoot me an email. I’m always happy to answer what I can!

And to quickly answer another faq: I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 6D along with various lenses. I’ll be making a post about that soon too.

Canon

Now, that being said, this camera body comes with the standard 18-55mm lens. I highly recommend grabbing what’s commonly referred to as the “nifty fifty”. It’s a very inexpensive, and extremely versatile lens.

Nikon

Same as with the Canon kit lens, this Nikon D3500 comes with a standard 18-55mm lens. These lenses are ok, but a nifty fifty will really be a great investment.
